Reasons For Moving To Dreamwidth
Obiturate
[info]factionary
About this entry: this is a compilation of the various complaints against LJ as of late. I believe that the combination thereof merits moving elsewhere, including for (but not limited to) roleplaying communities.

Об этой записи: это компиляция жалобов против ЖЖ. Я верю что из о этого, нам (включая ролевые игри) всем пора уйти на другую сайт. Если вам что-нибудь не понятно, я смогу обяснить по-русски.

There's the usual -- issues of security, functionality, constant downtime and lack of notifications, and more. There's also the fact that Livejournal's entire layout will be undergoing a complete overhaul (explanation here) and that many complain of eye strain as a result of the new design (source). However, customer service is currently one of the biggest problems. The thousands of comments on the various news pages about the most recent changes prove that people are mad. Our concerns are supposedly being taken into account, but there has been no proof of that yet, and some of the highest figures of authority on this site have shown very poor behavior toward the site's users.

ADMINISTRATION

[info]igrick is the head of Livejournal Russia (source, translation). Many of you have by now seen his Twitter account, where he refers to the 100+ pages of angry complaints on the update page as "spam" and openly laughs, saying that everyone will just get used to the changes and deal with it (translation).

The following may not be a professional translation, but I am a native Russian speaker, so here's the gist of some of what's been said by [info]igrick regarding the changes.

  • Question from a beta tester: Is there (or will there be) a way to switch back to the old commenting style?

[info]igrick: For now, you can switch back to the old style from the beta. In the future, you won't be able to.

    [source]

  • Comment: I wonder how much shit you'll get for taking away the subject lines.

[info]igrick: I already conducted a survey on the subject, the shit was delicious =)

    [source]

  • person 1: testing new style of commenting

    pretty))
    hooray it's here
    I like it

it's a shame that the subject lines are gone though

person 2: Were they really necessary? I've personally never understood their necessity. IMHO, of course.

    [info]igrick: +100500

[Everyone goes on to claim otherwise, Igrick doesn't respond again.]

    [source]

  • (part of) Comment: The preview button is gone. Hm. It won't be there anymore? 8)

[info]igrick: Re: preview -- is it really necessary?
[and all replies saying YES IT'S NECESSARY are ignored]

    [source]

2: The screen space isn't used economically - too much space, too little info, scrolling so much is tiring.

[info]igrick: 1: This is beta, there's only one server.
    2: Scrolling is free =)

    [source]

  • Comment: The purely cosmetic collection of useless space has increased. Question: Why the hell?

    [info]igrick: It's more comfortable?

    Reply: On a 24-inch monitor at work, I'd agree. On a netbook - I wouldn't say that.

    [info]igrick: Understood

    [source]

  • Comment: I suggest an option to choose between the old style and the new.

[info]igrick: What would the point be?

    [source]

  • Here is the infamous "only 1% of posts contain a subject" comment.

  • [info]igrick: "Then what do I do with those who also pay a ton of money and don't want subject lines?"

    [source]

  • This entire thread, where he made an inflammatory comment that he later screened.

  • Comment: [embedded image about Dreamwidth], When will it get through to you, sicko?

[info]igrick: Yes, registration via invite codes has even been omitted for the week.

    [source]

  • Someone asks what reasons people have for subject lines, igrick says "RP games"

However, [info]igrick is not the only one.

Anton Nossik, an advisor to SUP, has not reacted favourably to criticism by site users. In an interview given in March 2008, he accused LiveJournal users of "trying to scare and blackmail us, threatening to destroy our business," and stated that a large class of users have as their only purpose bringing harm to LiveJournal and its founders; "their goal is to criticize, destablilize and ruin our reputation." In the interview, he predicted that his likely reaction to such pressure would be to retaliate against the users rather than bowing to their pressure (source).

[info]pmpe, the manager of LJ's support group, has directly accused users of lying about the switches to their account renewal statuses, described further in this entry (source).

AUTOMATIC PAYMENTS

IMPORTANT: Check your account status, people are reporting that their automatic payments have been turned on for them without their consent (source 1, source 2). Attempts at questioning a staff member about this has led to their denial of anything being wrong, both on the English-speaking and Russian sides (source).

MONEY

LiveJournal doesn't seem to care about paying users. More revenue is supposedly made from advertisements than paid accounts. We can scream all we want about being paying customers, but LiveJournal will not listen. In fact, they've disconnected all their phones today so it is impossible to even contact them about anything anymore. Why the 'paying customer' remark is so laughable to them is that running ads on plus accounts contributes more money to them than the paid accounts do. You can choose to not look at most of the ads by reverting to a basic account (source), but that takes you down to 6 icons and the workarounds to make it look like the old style won't work. Can you roleplay your character with only 6 expressions and with this new style? And are you willing to? Things like Blogshopping get far more attention, with a this homepage having gone up one or two days of a poll asking about blogshop statistics from users. For the record, many Singaporean users are not happy with the changes, either.

SECURITY, STAFF INTEGRITY

There was a major breach of privacy in October of 2011. Certain private information could be viewed by others at random during the updates (source). Certain users had complete access to the accounts of others (source 1, source 2, source 3). Please read this entry, pertaining to account suspension, creepy comments on locked posts by LJ staff, and other wrongdoings. More on that here and here.

DREAMWIDTH

A user asked how the import of many RP journals might affect Dreamwidth's servers. The answer:

Don't worry, we've got it under control. We rent our servers instead of colocating for this very reason: so we can add additional server power when we need it. Also, [staff profile] mark (our primary sysadmin) worked on LJ for four years (so he's familiar with the code and the architecture) and has been sysadminning high-performance web applications ever since, including stints at Google and Mozilla, and [personal profile] alierak (our backup sysadmin) has been doing this for just as long. We've got y'all covered. :) (source)

Dreamwidth is also working on the ability to import entire communities. Their administrators currently state that when this is ready, a community with nearly 22,000 entries and close to 2,000,000 comments should take about 2-3 days to fully import (source). It won't be easy, but it will be possible to do this. Another thing worth reading is this comment by Dreamwidth administrator Denise regarding LJ's recent changes.

One feature that most likely will not be implemented on Dreamwidth, however, is ala carte userpics. Please read this which explains the reasons for it. The links provided in that response lead to the essays here and here. A good explanation for how to best migrate on over to Dreamwidth can be found here. It's worth noting that Dreamwidth's staff members are very courteous and respond quickly to any and all concerns brought forth.

Also worth checking out: Why we should leave.

So what does this all mean? I'm not saying "let's all abandon ship and run to Dreamwidth". We have no reason to stay on LiveJournal. Even if we've been here for a long time (5 years in my case), this site clearly has nothing left to offer us, nor do they care about us. Packing up and moving elsewhere is the best option for everyone, Roleplaying communities included -- not immediately, of course, but within the next few months or so. Think about what we're agreeing to support otherwise.

This entire thread, where he says something so bad he ends up screening it... not sure what it was, but it made people mad. I've heard it was something along the lines of "I think you are using subject lines for your comments, but I am using the new style so I can't see them :)" -- can someone confirm this?

As one of the people who saw that with my own eyes, yeah. It was something like 'If you just used a subject line to reply to this I can't see it because I'm using the new system :)'

I should have screencapped it...

I'm certainly not paying for any more of my accts, though they don't run out until February so I've got a little time to see where it goes. But I am not impressed by [info]igrick's attitude, nor the slow, often redundant, and headache-inducing changes this site has decided to go through with.

Someone just provided a screencap, but thanks! Good to know multiple people are confirming its validity.

And I'm sorry about the headaches it's been causing :( I've just had to deal with it being slow and at times non-responsive, but I know others have had it worse.

Provided here, but I was on the post at the time and can confirm: that's exactly what he said.

Dang, you guys are quick. Thanks!

Out of curiosity, why AREN'T you saying that? All the evidence listed here points to the fact that LJ is knowingly being made worse for RP sites. Our free accounts put more money into LJ's coffers from advertising exposure than our paid accounts to from direct money, so just not paying isn't going to affect their bottom line. It might actually improve it, given the image resources.

I'd love to say it, but there are reasons.

First, I acknowledge that this is largely a knee-jerk reaction. We're all mad right now, and though it's with good reason, all of this just happened. We need time to let this sink in. We need to see what, if anything, will be done to address our concerns. For roleplaying communities, it would be very difficult to just pack up and move elsewhere, taking all communities and accounts and putting them on another site. It would be very time-consuming, and there would definitely be a huge strain on Dreamwidth servers if everyone tried to do this all at once.

One of the games I'm in is both community and journal-based, so moving it would be very difficult and I suspect many players would be lost in the process. I don't know what's going to be decided for that game in particular, but if it stays, as mad as I am at LJ right now, I wouldn't want to leave that game. I've actually never seen a single ad on LiveJournal thanks to AdBlock, and if the games I'm in stay, I'll be sure to recommend that everyone install AdBlock as well.

Wondering if I should send the LJ people a link through the feedback thing just to make sure they know who they're paying for this crap. Think it's a good idea, or not?

I'm not sure how good the communication is between the Russian and English-speaking parts of LJ, but I can't see how it would hurt to bring this up...

wow can someone punch this guy in the nuts.

like seriously i wish he was in america so i could rip him a new asshole

For what it's worth, the Russian users have been saying pretty much the same thing, and they're in the same country as him.

I'm still amazed that this seems to be the first big thing he's done as head of LJRu, and he's managed to cheerfully screw it up in every possible way.

I think the most amazing part is the huge emphasis on cheerfully. He does not give a single fuck about the fact that everything is in chaos over this change, he's just busy sucking his own dick over how great his changes are. How does that big of an asshole become the head of a company that relies so entirely on customer support.

I've been in the "can we PLEASE just move already" group since this happened, but this has driven me to completely part ways with LJ. (As much as I can, anyway.) I am literally disgusted, and am entirely ashamed of how much money I've poured into this site for the past five years.

The whole attitude of only certain people using subject lines and refusing to care that any machine older than a year and a half has issues running this new format (seriously, I feel like I'm using IE on Windows XP, and my computer is barely two years old) is bad enough, but then you pair that with his arrogance, and I just cannot handle it.

Yup. This was my comment on the move initially, but since digging up more of the comments and examples proving that LJ is hideously failing us, I'm pretty much in the SO LONG AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH group.

He's been the head of LJ Russia for less than a month and he's already managed to cock everything up. Way to start a track record.

I honestly couldn't even believe it at first, I had to go and find several sources confirming it. It's completely inappropriate for someone so high up to behave this way.

Also, this is my third attempt at trying to post this comment. A+ functionality.

what a prick. I have no other words that would better describe him rn. so embarrassed for him to be accossiated with russians.
if he wanted to cut the functionality of the lj he could've just made a light version of it for people who don't need anything more that a box with text area and "post comment" button, why forcing this shit on everyone?

and how embarrassing for self-proclaimed "head of livejournal" not knowing english.

I fear for your safety though.

yesterday I've made a few comments in his journal in russian than were far worse. I thought I would get banned but so far I didn't. maybe he didn't check anything farther than page 2, idk.

SEE, I NEED SPELL-CHECK!

Wow, I just read the post about the integrity of LJ staff. What. The. Hell.

I didn't even know about any of that until someone linked it here in this post, either.

tbh i'm curious as to why this hasn't been mentioned to tech sites. from what i heard, it might help to have the kind of sites that would discuss this kind of thing aware?

Tech sites? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

This was initially made to inform RP communities of the costs of staying and benefits of leaving, but if you think the information would be useful for other purposes, I don't see anything wrong with mentioning the it elsewhere.

I went and checked my account status.

It was true, the automatic payments were turned on without my consent and I'm sure that before they were turned off....

Mine too on my other account. But then, I could be a lying slanderous spammer just trying to get the internetz riled up.

Thanks for compiling and translating all of this information: I think Igrick's attitude about the thing is quite possibly the most frustrating part of all. I admit the difficulty with managing long threads due to the lack of thread/parent/link options is a close second; currently forcing all things into my own style, which fixes that much for now.

It's amazing how sheerly restoring the functionality of a game (through means of the community's S2 CCS codes rather than LJ's own support) has many of us hazily willing to put up with insulting customer service.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, and by making this post, I've been introduced to many more things I never heard of before, like the stuff I added to the entry recently. They look at your locked posts, they take your money and don't refund it when they take too much, some of them are complete igdicks, and I don't see any good reason for anyone to stay here.

...Except the Singapore people who use it as a shopping site and give LJ all its revenue, apparently.

Followed this link from the LJ-news page, and wanted to drop this here since someone above was talking about the monetary value of advertising being seen by free accounts.

$72M USD from Singapore blogshopping on LJ

Seems we're just little fish now.

Added to the entry. Gross.

All I read was this posts and the dreamwidth post about LJ being creepy. Holy SHIT.

I wish I could just spam this post everywhere, but at the same time I don't want to lead the LJ staff to good communities and have them get shit on by these asses.

I'm sticking around only for the communities that don't move. There is literally no excuse for customer service to be this bad.

Go ahead and spread it, I don't think there's anything they can do about this post. If they choose to delete it, I'll just make a new one and use it as further proof of their dickery. Everything from the original post is backed up in a word document.

Can you add a request for someone to post on tech sites like reddit/gizmodo/Boing Boing/The Consumerist/other blogsphere sites? Something along the lines of:

1. New update was implemented dispite issues raised by beta users. New update broke mobile browsers and screen readers for the blind. New update is not keyboard-friendly.

2. Invasion of privacy issues, including the automatic payment, personal lj violations, lj abuse staff abuse.

3. Ilya.

I'd love to do something like this for ya, but I don't know my way around the blogsphere well enough to know where to start and I don't know how to spin it so it's an attention-grabbing story. =(

I have no idea how to go about doing any of that either, but what concerns me is how recently this all happened, and whether or not it's even appropriate to try and spread the info to other sites so soon. I think it's best to spread it among the LJ community for now, because that's where it's needed.

Thanks for putting this together!

Russian simply are afraid of any heads, it has developed historically, loyal people survived only

Извините, я не совсем понимаю. Может быть по-русски лучше?

None of the money that exchanges hands in Singapore blogshops goes to Livejournal as of yet besides ad revenue (unless they buy paid accounts which... really, I think most blogshops are too cheap to do so) but I think that will change once they fully implement their new changes.

This homepage happened after one or two days of a poll asking about blogshop statistics from users. NO warning. Just boom.

Edited at 2011-12-23 04:01 am (UTC)

Updated, thank you.

They probably make a lot of money from the ad revenue of that anyway.

can you please link me to the page where I can check if automatic payments are on or off for my account?

It's linked in the post, the words "account status" are a URL.

"You can choose to not look at the ads by reverting to a basic account"

Basic accounts see ads too. Just not everywhere (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=262).

My bad. I'll edit, thanks for letting me know.

I already left this little bit over at [info]rollback88, but a friend just asked me to repost it here as well.

Just a few hours ago, I held a short conversation with someone who is apparently the manager of LJ's support team. You can find how it went over here. Just in case if, y'know, you wondered if Igrick is the only jackass on the staff.

Thank you! I'll add it to the entry.

I'm sorry for everyone this happened to, it's just stupid. If it happened to me (which it thankfully didn't), my account would have been renewed last night while I was sleeping.

this alarms me so much. moving to dreamwidth, linked this page to my journal. thank you!

Thank you for spreading the word and good luck at DW!

You know, everyone all over LJ is talking about this being a kneejerk reaction. But some of us are just getting sick as hell of the way we get treated over here and the lack of respect we get from the Russian side of things. Apparently, because we're not Russian, we don't matter. I mean, even if you don't care about the complaints, there's better ways of saying you don't care.

"because we're not Russian, we don't matter"

Actually, many Russians aren't happy about this either. They get the same treatment. Most of the translated [info]igrick replies were made to Russian users, some of them even the initial beta testers.
